143 Visa FAQ

What this visa lets you do

This is a permanent residence visa. It lets you and any family members who have also been granted this visa to:

  • stay in Australia indefinitely
  • work and study in Australia
  • enrol in Medicare, Australia's scheme for health-related care and expenses
  • apply for Australian citizenship (if you are eligible)
  • sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence
  • travel to and from Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted (after that time, you will need a resident return visa or another visa to return to Australia).

 

Before you apply

You have to pay more for Contributory Parent visas than for most other visas. This is because many families wanted a faster visa process and were prepared to pay a higher contribution towards their family members' health and welfare costs in Australia. Visa charges cannot be waived or reduced.

19a The second instalment – for each person included on the application is $2065.

19b This visa is for:

  1. an applicant who is the holder of a subclass 173 (Contributory Parent (Temporary)) visa at the time of application; or
  2. an applicant who has been the holder of a subclass 173 (Contributory Parent (Temporary)) visa; and is the holder of a substituted subclass 600 visa at the time of application; or
  3. an applicant who has held a subclass 173 (Contributory Parent (Temporary)) visa at any time in the 28 days immediately before making the application; or an applicant whose application is combined, or sought to be combined, with an application made by that person.
  4. an applicant who:
    1. has been the holder of a subclass 173 (Contributory Parent (Temporary)) visa; and
    2. provides the Minister with evidence that compassionate and compelling circumstances exist for the person to be considered to be the holder of a subclass 173 (Contributory Parent (Temporary)) visa for the purpose of the application;
  5. an applicant who:
    1. made a valid application for a Parent (Migrant) (Class AX) visa before 27 June 2003; and
    2. withdrew that application at the same time as making the application for the Contributory Parent (Migrant) (Class CA) visa;
  6. an applicant who:
    1. made a valid application for a Parent (Migrant) (Class AX) visa before 27 June 2003; and
    2. withdrew that application at the same time as making the application for the Contributory Parent (Temporary) (Class UT) visa;
  7. an applicant who is a contributory parent newborn child; or whose application is combined, or sought to be combined, with an application made by that person.
  8. an applicant who:
    1. made a valid application for an Aged Parent (Residence) (Class BP) visa before 1 July 2003; and
    2. withdrew that application at the same time as making the application for the Contributory Aged Parent (Residence) (Class DG) visa;
  9. an applicant who:
    1. is the holder of a subclass 884 (Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary)) visa at the time of application; or
    2. whose application is combined, or sought to be combined, with an application made by that person:
  10. an applicant who:
    1. held a subclass 884 (Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary)) visa; and
    2. is the holder of a substituted subclass 600 visa at the time of application;
      or whose application is combined, or sought to be combined, with an application made by that person:
  11. an applicant who:
    1. who has held a subclass 884 (Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary)) visa at any time in the 28 days immediately before making the application; or
    2. whose application is combined, or sought to be combined, with an application made by that person.
  12. an applicant who:
    1. held a subclass 884 (Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary)) visa; and
    2. provides the Minister with evidence that compassionate and compelling circumstances exist for the person to be considered to be the holder of a subclass 884 (Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary)) visa for the purpose of the application;
  13. an applicant who:
    1. made a valid application for an Aged Parent (Residence) (Class BP) visa before 1 July 2003; and
    2. withdrew that application at the same time as making the application for the Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) (Class UU) visa;
  14. Applicant who was the holder of a subclass 173 (Contributory Parent (Temporary)) visa at the time of application: $19 420.
  15. Applicant who:
    1. held a subclass 173 (Contributory Parent (Temporary)) visa; and
    2. was the holder of a substituted Subclass 600 visa at the time of application; and
    3. is not described in item 3 (below): $19 420.
  16. Applicant who:
    1. held a subclass 173 (Contributory Parent (Temporary)) visa; and
    2. was, at the time of application, the holder of a substituted
      subclass 600 visa or the child or step child of an applicant mentioned in item 2 (above); and​
    3. is the child or step child of an applicant for a Contributory Parent (Migrant) (Class CA) visa, and was less than 18 at the time of application for a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (Class UT) visa: nil.
  17. Applicant who:
    1. was the holder of a subclass 173 (Contributory Parent (Temporary)) visa at the time of application, and:
    2. is the child or step child of an applicant for a Contributory Parent (Migrant) (Class CA) visa; and
    3. was less than 18 at the time of application for a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (Class UT) visa: nil.
  18. Applicant who has held a subclass 173 (Contributory Parent (Temporary)) visa at any time in the 28 days immediately before making the application $19 420
  19. Applicant:
    1. who has held a subclass 173 (Contributory Parent (Temporary)) visa; and
    2. in relation to whom the Minister is satisfied that compassionate and compelling circumstances exist for the person to be considered to be the holder of a subclass 173 (Contributory Parent (Temporary)) visa at the time of application $17 575.
  20. An applicant who:
    1. is a dependent child of an applicant for a Contributory Parent (Migrant) (Class CA) visa; and
    2. was less than 18 at the time of application $2095.
  21. Any other applicant $43 600.
  22. Applicant who:
    1. was less than 18 at the time of application; and
    2. is a dependent child of an applicant for a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (Class UT) visa: $2095

    3. is the child or step child of an applicant for a Contributory Parent (Migrant) (Class CA) visa, and was less than 18 at the time of application for a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) (Class UU) visa: nil.
  28. Applicant who:
    1. was the holder of a subclass 884 (Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary)) visa at the time of application, and:
    2. is the child or step child of an applicant for a Contributory Aged Parent (Residence) (Class DG) visa; and
    3. was less than 18 at the time of application for a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) (Class UU) visa: nil.
  29. Applicant who has held a subclass 884 (Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary)) visa at any time in the 28 days immediately before making the application $19 420
  30. Applicant:
    1. who has held a subclass 884 (Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary)) visa; and
    2. in relation to whom the Minister is satisfied that compassionate and compelling circumstances exist for the person to be considered to be the holder of a subclass 884 (Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary)) visa at the time of application $16 545.
  31. An applicant who:
    1. is a dependent child of an applicant for a Contributory Aged Parent (Residence) (Class DG) visa; and
    2. was less than 18 at the time of application $2095.
  32. Any other applicant $43 600.
  33. Applicant who:
    1. was less than 18 at the time of application; and
    2. is a dependent child of an applicant for a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) (Class UU) visa: $2095.

The visa application charge for this visa is paid in two instalments.

  • pay the first      instalment when you lodge the application
  • pay the second      instalment when we tell you to. You must pay it for the visa to be granted.

Other costs

You might have to pay other costs, such as the costs of health assessments and police certificates, or any other certificates or tests. You are responsible for making the necessary arrangements.

You will also be asked to organise an assurance of support, which includes a bond, before your visa can be decided.

If you have a Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173)

The information in this section applies to you if you or your family members already have a Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173).

Your documents

If you or your family members already have a Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173), you do not need to provide documents to show:

  • you meet the balance-of-family test
  • evidence of your family members’ dependency. You must tell us if any of your family members are no longer dependent on you.

You need to provide documents only if your circumstances have changed.

Your sponsor

If the child who sponsored you for your Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173) has died, you could be eligible for a sponsorship concession.
